What is Solar Powered Refrigerators?
They are absorption refrigerators. An absorption refrigerator is a refrigerator that uses a heat source (e.g., solar, kerosene-fueled flame) to provide the energy needed to drive the cooling system. Absorption refrigerators are a popular alternative to regular compressor refrigerators where electricity is unreliable, costly, or unavailable, where noise from the compressor is problematic, or where surplus heat is available (e.g., from turbine exhausts or industrial processes).

Solar Fridge re-invented by UK Student
There are four ways by which we can build these refrigerators :
- A refrigerator which is powered by electricity produced by Solar Cells: These are the conventional refrigerator which we use in our daily life, the only difference is that it would be powered by electricity.
- Thermoelectric solid-state refrigerator powered by solar photovoltaic electricity: These refrigerator uses the Peltier effect to create a heat flux between the junction of two different types of materials.
- Absorption refrigerator in which the boiler heat is generated from concentrated sunlight: In this method, we use solar energy to heat water for producing steam.
- Stirling engine refrigerator in which the compressor is mechanically driven by a Stirling engine: When we heat gas using sunlight, the gas would expand and push the piston forward. We can use this method to power the compressor of the refrigerator. Read more about Stirling Engine.
